The boat, Dream Catcher, is the first boat in South Africa to be designed specifically for whale watching. It is extremely comfortable and spacious, with on board toilets, observation deck for photography enthusiasts, PA system and even a hydrophone! Dream Catcher is 14m long and complies with all the safety regulations set out by the marine authorities.

Once you have arrived at The Great White House, you will receive a brief introductory talk about the route, safety, and what to look out for. Passengers are fitted with comfortable life-jackets and waterproof jackets. Safety is of the utmost importance.

Whale Watching Trip length is between 2 and 2.5 hours, depending on sightings and weather conditions. All cruises depart from Kleinbaai harbour near Gansbaai. Dyer Island is located 8 km from shore and is an access controlled Important Bird Area (IBA) for the conservation of its many resident bird species, including African penguins. Adjacent to Dyer Island is Geyser Rock, home to a 60,000 strong Cape fur seal colony. These seals are present all year round. We will take you into the channel of water between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock known as the world famous ‘Shark Alley’. We will then take you to the whale hot-spots in the bay. With over a decade of experience, not only do we know where to expect the best whale viewings, but the whales have also learned where to expect us!

We pride ourselves on being both fun and educational. Each trip is led by experienced marine biologists and guides who will share their knowledge with you, keeping emphasis on the welfare and conservation of the animal. Responsible tourism is our main objective so we focus on conservation, education, community upliftment and safety.

The boat is surveyed annually by the SA Maritime Safety Authority, conforms to its specifications and is licensed and fully insured for 50 passengers and 6 crew. Safety equipment includes first aid kit, radio and cellular phone.
All clients have to sign an indemnity form on arrival before they can ride no sign no ride.

Customer Reviews

It has been an incredible experience. We saw whales, penguins, seals, sharks and dolphins. The sea was very calm and we've always had with us a biologist who has explained us everything about the Big 5. I can say that this tour is very well organized. We had a pick up from Cape Town to Dyer Island: the driver was very good and we saw a beautiful sunrise while arriving in the area of Hermanus. Once we arrived at destination, we had a briefing on the security of the boat and then the adventure started. We have been on the boat for 2 hours and we've seen all the Big 5. Once we got back, we had a debriefing to understand better what we saw. And then we had soup and bread. On our way back we also visited the penguins sanctuary and it was really interesting. I think that this experience not only gives you the opportunity to see whales, but it also gives you all the instruments to better understand the marine life in the aerea of Dyer Island. Absolutely recommended! - Federica Villa

Una tomadura de pelo. Carísimo para lo que es, no vimos ballenas a pesar de hacer un dia esplendido y la reserva de animales cutre y sin explicaciones. Una decepción. Vimos ballenas al dia siguiente desde la costa. - gloria martinez martinez

I was disappointed. We had signed up for the 0900 trip but, with no explanation, we were put on a 1230 trip instead, apparently because there was no transportation available for the earlier trip. I wasn't given the option to arrange my own transportation. What makes me regret not getting on the earlier trip was that they saw humpback dolphins and southern right whales, the two species I was most interested in seeing, while our trip did not. The wind picked up and our trip was rougher as well. Bright side: Our naturalist Jax was excellent and the staff did what they could to get us back to Cape Town as early as they could. - Michael Scott

Our initial trip was cancelled due to bad weather, Dyer Island went out of their way to keep trying to get us rebooked for another trip, which they did. Super friendly and knowledgeable service. - Daniel Addison

Good tour. But could not watch whales and dolphins. Looking forward for next trip with hope to see whales and dolphins.... - Dinesh Seeruttun
