The duration of the Marine Big 5 Tour spans between 2 to 2.5 hours, depending upon wildlife sightings and prevailing weather conditions. All tours launch from Kleinbaai Harbour in close proximity to Gansbaai. Dyer Island, located 8 km offshore, stands as an access-controlled Important Bird Area (IBA), safeguarding numerous resident avian species, including the endangered African penguin. Situated adjacent to Dyer Island is Geyser Rock, which is home to a robust colony of 60,000 Cape fur seals, present year-round. Our journey will take us through the world-famous channel known as ‘Shark Alley’, nestled between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, Gansbaai include various species of seabirds such as albatrosses, petrels, shearwaters, gannets and terns, these birds are adapted to life at sea and can be seen gliding over the waves, diving for fish, or resting on the water’s surface. Next, we will navigate to prime whale viewing areas within the bay. With a wealth of over two decades of experience, we possess an innate awareness of optimal whale sighting locations. The Southern right whale season extends from June to November, during which our focus shifts to observing these magnificent creatures as they visit our coastal waters for mating and calving purposes. Throughout the year, we may also encounter the more reserved resident Bryde’s whale. The period spanning December to June offers opportunities to actively search for this species during our tours. Additionally, we may encounter the majestic Humpback whales during the initiation and conclusion of their migration cycle. Our region also boasts three distinct dolphin species—common, bottlenose, and the endangered humpback variety. As luck would have it, we may have the privilege of encountering one of these species. This marine adventure includes a visit to the shark cage diving vessels in the area to offer a sighting of a bronze whaler shark or the awe-inspiring great white shark.
It’s important to acknowledge that this is wildlife we work with and we cannot guarantee sightings; however, our dedicated team strives to provide opportunities to witness as many members of the Marine Big 5 as possible.
A hallmark of our tours lies in their fusion of enjoyment and education. Each excursion is led by seasoned marine biologists and guides, who eagerly share their wealth of knowledge with you, all while upholding a strong commitment to animal welfare and conservation. At the core of our ethos is responsible tourism, epitomized by our dedication to research, conservation initiatives, education, and the betterment of our local community.

We had an absolutely fantastic experience on the Marine Big 5 Tour --- truly one of the highlights of our entire trip. We were incredibly lucky and managed to see everything: whales, sharks, seals, penguins and dolphins. It was magical from start to finish. What really stood out was how respectful and mindful the team was toward the animals and nature. The entire experience felt safe, responsible and very well organized. The service on land and on board was excellent. Even though the weather was chilly, we were provided with wind jackets, which made the tour very comfortable. The videographer on board was a lovely extra and we appreciated that the boat wasn't overcrowded --- it felt spacious and allowed everyone a great view. We can genuinely recommend this tour 100%. It's a must-do! A couple of very small points: * I personally would have loved to stay a bit longer at the seal colony, although I completely understand that whales are the main focus of the tour. * Our tour was rescheduled on short notice, leading to a later departure. We had originally booked the 7:00 AM tour but ended up only leaving later and returning around 11:30 AM. This required us to adjust our Garden Route travel plans a little. That said, the tour was absolutely incredible and we wouldn't have wanted to miss it for anything. A wonderfully run experience with unforgettable wildlife moments --- highly recommended! - Natalie
Brilliant trip in a great boat with excellent crew. Expensive but I would definitely recommend it nonetheless! - Karl
The tour and the organization were absolutely spot-on. We really have nothing to complain about. What you actually get to see in terms of wildlife is something no one can fully control. Of course, it's a bit of a shame that the great white sharks aren't around anymore, and by mid-November the whales were already heading off again. But we knew that beforehand. We can still totally recommend the tour, even though from our point of view it's pretty expensive. Especially with no great whites around, the price for 2.5 hours feels very high to us. We'd also really like to thank you for the voluntary and hassle-free refund for one person in our group who got sick and couldn't join. That was great and definitely not something to take for granted, especially with such short notice! Thank you so much!! - Steffen
Hello! We really enjoyed the tour and were delighted with the sightings. We also felt that the tour was carried out in a way that was respectful of nature. The only negative point was the shark sighting. We didn't like that the sharks were attracted with food scraps and that the boats were so close to them. Nevertheless, we can recommend this trip to everyone. Thank you very much! - Dennis
Amazing experience. Easy booking, helpful and friendly staff. The boat we went out on was perfect for comfort and providing perfect views. Guys on the boat had great knowledge of what we were seeing. Amazed to see dolphins, sharks and whales. Highly recommended to anyone - Clair
