The boat, Dream Catcher, is the first boat in South Africa to be designed specifically for whale watching. It is extremely comfortable and spacious, with on board toilets, observation deck for photography enthusiasts, PA system and even a hydrophone! Dream Catcher is 14m long and complies with all the safety regulations set out by the marine authorities.

Once you have arrived at The Great White House, you will receive a brief introductory talk about the route, safety, and what to look out for. Passengers are fitted with comfortable life-jackets and waterproof jackets. Safety is of the utmost importance.

Whale Watching Trip length is between 2 and 2.5 hours, depending on sightings and weather conditions. All cruises depart from Kleinbaai harbour near Gansbaai. Dyer Island is located 8 km from shore and is an access controlled Important Bird Area (IBA) for the conservation of its many resident bird species, including African penguins. Adjacent to Dyer Island is Geyser Rock, home to a 60,000 strong Cape fur seal colony. These seals are present all year round. We will take you into the channel of water between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock known as the world famous ‘Shark Alley’. We will then take you to the whale hot-spots in the bay. With over a decade of experience, not only do we know where to expect the best whale viewings, but the whales have also learned where to expect us!

We pride ourselves on being both fun and educational. Each trip is led by experienced marine biologists and guides who will share their knowledge with you, keeping emphasis on the welfare and conservation of the animal. Responsible tourism is our main objective so we focus on conservation, education, community upliftment and safety.

The boat is surveyed annually by the SA Maritime Safety Authority, conforms to its specifications and is licensed and fully insured for 50 passengers and 6 crew. Safety equipment includes first aid kit, radio and cellular phone.
All clients have to sign an indemnity form on arrival before they can ride no sign no ride.

Customer Reviews

We had an awesome experience. The driver who picked us up at the hotel was so nice and polite! When we arrived at the great house everything was very organized and the staff was really helpful. The whale watching experience was amazing ! We saw 2 whales, many penguins, seals, dolphins and 1 shark. The return trip to Cape Town was good as well. Unfortunately I don’t remember the driver’s name, we loved him! - Isabela Assis Michalaros

Quite dissatisfied experience 1 your and 20 minutes on crowded boat (instead of 2 and a half hour) Trip done in a hurry, a lot of unneccessary staff on the boat I will not recommend your event to other people - Jacek Sobkowiak

The trip was really good but did however seem quite rushed once we were on the boat, not a lot of time was spent watching the seals or birds at the Island. The passenger pick up was a total debacle. I was told I would be picked up at 0830 am (for some reason they rang the hotel and left a message with this pick up time instead of emailing me like they did for the shark cage dive). I received a knock on my hotel room door at 0750 hours, just as well I was nearly ready. So the blame game of whose fault it was started with the driver blaming the hotel etc, the driver tried to blame me at one stage. I was the third person in the pick up vehicle by 0800 hours. By 0915 am we very just leaving the city of Cape Town due to the driver not having the correct information for a passenger pick up. We went to EVERY Raddison Hotel looking for these people despite the driver ringing the office a couple of times! This particular couple once picked up were suitably not impressed and showed the paperwork clearly indicating exactly which Raddison hotel they were staying at. Halfway during the trip we made a stop for people to grab a drink and go to the toilet, the driver made it very very clear that it would have to be a brief stop as we were running late. 15 + minutes later the driver returned to the vehicle. The return trip, included in the tour, was a trip to SANCCOB after the whale watching tour. The guide was reluctant and only gave 10 minutes, not enough time to look at the birds, read the information or to visit the shop to support such a worthy cause. He took longer to get his coffee that morning. I was standing at the cash register when he came up to hurry the staff member along and then I stopped once more to look at the birds and the guide was calling my name. It had not even been 10 minutes yet. This was very very disappointing as visiting SANCCOB was one of the reasons I chose this tour. - Stephanie Hill

It was a wonderful experience, made better by the beautiful weather that day. But the amount of time we spent watching the whales and seals was perfect. Unfortunately there were no sharks to be seen, but the crew and company did seem to try and explained to me after why they think the Great Whites had left the bay for a while; it was interesting. I had a great experience and would highly recommend it. - Nicole Robillard

Picked up later than first expected although the change was communicated well with a message left at our hotel. Journey as expected and arrived within anticipated travel time. Good briefing and introduction to the day and then a short walk to the boat. Sea was calm which was certainly a bonus and after a short trip we were seeing whales. Great experience with 8 mothers and their calves with excellent commentary on what we were witnessing. After some time with the whales we moved on towards the sister companies shark diving boat and saw a shark near their cage before a journey out to shark alley. On the way we saw plenty of other wildlife including penguins and again the excellent commentary ensured we were aware of all around us and what we were witnessing. On arrival in shark alley we saw a great spectacle of thousands of fur seals basking in the sun or swimming around our boat. After a while here it was time to return to shore a bowl of soup and trip back to Cape Town. All in all a wonderful experience- what a great day. Thank you one and all at Dyer Island Cruises and Marine big 5 experiences! - Phill Ballard
